The Louisiana Justice Coalition is an organization working to achieve systemic change for Louisiana’s broken criminal justice system, working primarily on the crisis in indigent defense. If you were represented by a public defender, and believe that your representation was less satisfactory than you deserved, we would like to hear more about your experience. We have no attorneys on staff and are not set up to offer legal counsel or assistance to any individuals for their cases.

National experts and local advocates universally agree that the public defense system in this state is among the worst in the nation. This means people who cannot afford to pay a private attorney are regularly denied equal access to justice. Our coalition is united and guided by the belief that the amount of money an individual has in their pocket should not determine the quality of their defense.

While there are plenty of statistics and research to illustrate the problems, it is the voices and stories of real people, such as yourself, that will ultimately convince the media to report the crisis and the politicians to act to correct it. While we cannot offer any legal representation, we may be able to offer you a forum to tell your story. This story may be used to publicize the problem in the system and/or encourage more people to join the fight for fairness. Your story could be very important in our efforts to prevent injustice from happening to the next person in your situation.

Please download this form, which has questions that will help us build a story from your experience with a public defender. Please fill it out to the best of your ability and submit it to the Louisiana Justice Coalition. If you currently have an attorney working on your case, you should consult with your lawyer prior to filling out this form. We look forward to hearing from you and doing our best to fight for fairness in the criminal justice system.
